Stress . . . The Hidden Killer
The physical effects of stress have historically aided in the survival of the individual. The release of adrenalin speeds the heart rate, pumps more blood to the major muscles and changes various autonomic nervous functions such as the rate of digestion. These changes aid the individual in the "flight or fight" stage of survival. Ordinarily, simple relaxation, following the removal of the source of the stress, returns body function to normal levels.
The flight or fight response gave individuals the strength and stamina to survive the dangerous situations. Unfortunately, the flight or fight response to most modern sources of stress is not appropriate. With the exception of more extreme sports, rarely is the modern individual faced with life threatening situations that cause us stress. Instead, stress is caused by deadlines, traffic, financial concerns and relationships. The inappropriateness of the fight or flight response, totally ingrained in our instinctive memory, releases no stress and in fact can add to the stress of the situation.
Likewise, in this time of chronic stress, the relaxation phase that helps to restore the body's autonomic levels to their normal levels is no longer available. Constant over activation of the autonomic nervous system can lead to physical and emotional strain on the individual. As the immune system is effected, many stress-induced symptoms can be exhibited including:
What Is Relaxation Massage?
The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. The main purpose of Swedish massage (as opposed to deeper therapeutic massage techniques) is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles.
Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish Massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.
Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health and well being.
