Aromatherapy is the art and science of using essential oils, the aromatic extracts of plant and flowers, for psychological and physical well-being. These essential oils are inhaled into the lungs or pass through the skin to offer both psychological and physical benefits. The aroma of the natural essential oil stimulates the brain to trigger a reaction and the natural chemicals of the essential oil are drawn into the lungs and can also supply physical benefit.
What Can Aromatherapy Do?
Of the five senses, our sense of smell is the most primitive and most closely associated with our emotions and how our body responds to them.
In fact, studies have shown that the sense of smell can dramatically affect the physical body. A study done in 1999 by Stockhurst & Gritzmann demonstrated how smell can trigger responses in the brain. For four days, insulin was injected into healthy male volunteers and, naturally, their blood glucose fell. At the same time, they were exposed to a smell. On the fifth day they were just given the smell, and, their blood glucose fell again.
Aromatherapy uses the innate properties of the essential oils to create reactions by the brain and body. By the careful mixing of essential oils, a variety of results can be achieved. Aromatherapy is not a miracle cure that will cure serious illnesses but rather a holistic solution which can aid in the healing.

Aromatherapy and Other Holistic or Traditional Medicines
Aromatherapy should never be considered a replacement for another modality of treatment. Never discontinue any medications or session plans your medical practitioner or other holistic healer has deemed necessary, unless you first speak with them personally. Aromatherapy works in concert with all other forms of therapy. It is a wonderful complement to other treatments. We can all work together to get you feeling healthier, happier and more whole. This is the holistic approach.
